Glossary of Terms
Access
Code
This is a password that you use to
log onto course content online (such as assignments, labs, practice exam
questions, and so on). Once registered, access codes generally last for a
duration of between 6 months and 2 years. Each access code is unique and can
only be used by one person.
Adoption
Textbook adoption simply means your
Instructor has ordered or “adopted” a textbook for a course. Keep in mind that
it is not the Hawks Shop that determines what textbooks are used for each course
but the Instructor teaching that semester.
Buyback
Buyback is when we purchase your
textbooks based on the market value of the book from our wholesalers or for
bookstore needs. We do buyback every day. Buybacks do not require a receipt. You
can bring any textbook to buyback regardless of where you purchased it. Loose
leaf and instructor created materials may also be eligible for buyback. Please
note that not all books are eligible for buyback.
Cengage
Unlimited
Cengage Unlimited is a digital
subscription that gives students total and on-demand access to all the digital
learning platforms, ebooks, online homework and study tools Cengage has to
offer.
Course
Number
A course number is a specified number
linked to a class each term.
E-Book
An e-book is an electronic version of
a book. Some e-books are only available online, while others are available for
download to your computer (i.e., can be put on an e-reader, iPod or computer).
ISBN
An ISBN is a 10- or 13-digit number
that identifies a particular title and edition of a book. You can find the ISBN
on the back cover and it is the best way to identify your textbook. Searching
for textbooks by ISBN ensures that you buy the correct edition and copy.
Loose
Leaf Textbook
A loose leaf textbook is a regular
textbook; however, it does not have the traditional binding like a hardcover or
a paperback. Basically, a loose leaf edition is just a stack of pages that is
“binder ready”. Loose leaf books may also be eligible for buyback.
Optional
Text
If a textbook is marked “Optional”,
the instructor believes that the material in the book is supplementary to the
lesson plan and will enhance your overall understanding of the course material.
It is recommended that you attend your class prior to purchasing optional
textbooks. Please check with your instructor to inquire if you should buy any or
all of the optional texts listed for your course.
Rental
Book
A rental book is a book that is on
the textbook rental list provided by PrismRBS. In order to rent a
textbook, the student is required to have their driver’s license and a credit or
debit card on file that expires after the return date. If the book is not
returned by the due date, the credit card on file will be charged the difference
between the purchase and the rent price.
Required
Text
If a textbook is marked as “Required”
for a course, it is due to the instructor’s desire that all students should read
the material. It will either be discussed in class or used as the basis for
assignments, tests and exams.
Section
Due to enrollment, classroom size,
and scheduling, some larger classes are divided into multiple sections and these
sections are identified by specific section numbers.
Sellback
Sellback is another term for Buyback.
Please see Buyback for more information.
Students
Have Text
Students Have Text simply means that
student should have bought and used the specific textbook for a previous
semester. When shopping for textbooks, you may see the shortened version “Stdnts
have Txt”.
